Alberts Senior’s Benefit

The Alberta Seniors Benefit (ASB) program provides a monthly income supplement to federal income sources including Old Age Security (OAS) and Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS).

Eligibility for a benefit is determined by:

  • the type of accommodation you live in,
  • your marital/cohabitation status
  • are 65 years of age or older
  • your income (combined with your spouse/ partner’s income, if applicable, regardless of their age)
  • have lived in Alberta for at least 3 months immediately before applying, and
  • receiving the federal OAS pension, e.g., have lived in Canada for 10 years.

Special Needs Assistance for Seniors

The SNA program provides a lump-sum payment to eligible low-income seniors. This program provides assistance with some of the cost of appliances and some health and personal supports.

A senior’s or senior couple’s total annual income, residence and marital status, and the items requested are used to determine the amount funded. The maximum assistance available is $5,000 in a benefit year, which runs from July 1 to June 30.

Dental & Optical Assistance

The Dental and Optical Assistance for Seniors programs are based on income and provide low- to moderate-income seniors with financial assistance for basic dental and optical services that help maintain a reasonable level of health.

  • You could be eligible for up to a maximum of $5,000 of coverage for eligible procedures every 5 years under the Dental program and up to $230 every three years for prescription eyeglasses under the Optical program.

Seniors Property Tax Deferral Program

The Seniors Property Tax Deferral Program (SPTDP) allows eligible senior homeowners to defer all or part of their property taxes through a low-interest home equity loan with the Alberta government.

Seniors Home Adaptation and Repair Program

The Seniors Home Adaptation and Repair Program (SHARP) provides low-interest home equity loans to help seniors finance necessary repairs, adaptations and renovations to their homes. A maximum loan of $40,000 is available to seniors and senior couples with an annual total income of $75,000 or less and who have a minimum of 25 per cent home equity in their primary residence.
